An ultrasound uses sound waves to penetrate the soft tissue and organs to create a picture on a monitor. This procedure uses no radiation and is safe for mother and baby.
Get the Picture With a 2D Baby Ultrasound
A 2D baby ultrasound from Northline Women's Health Center is the standard, high-quality ultrasound which is typically used to evaluate fetal anatomy and determine the baby’s sex. The picture is black-and-white and flat, meaning it does not show shape or dimension. Because there is a lack of depth and shading to the image, it is not used to get “life-like” pictures of the baby, but is often used to determine gender. The best time to use a 2D baby ultrasound to see if it is a boy or girl is between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. A 3D/4D baby ultrasound creates a three-dimensional view of your baby and is a better choice for those who want true, life-like images. These are best done between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy.
