Easy Ways for Women with Arthritis to Stay Active Arthritis affects more women than men over age 55, but you don’t have to surrender to this common pain of growing older.  Staying active is the best thing for women who live with arthritis and there are many ways to do this.

A brisk walk every day is helpful for knee, hip and back pain. Start with a few trips around the block and then see how you can incorporate more walking into your everyday activities. Try parking further from the entrance when you go to a store or walk down every aisle a few times while grocery shopping.

Yoga is an excellent form of exercise for arthritis. The movements and stretching in yoga can work wonders for your muscles and joints and help you improve range of motion.

Pilates is also a great exercise because it doesn’t put stress on joints and it can help you achieve better alignment. Cycling is another excellent activity because it improves leg muscles. Just be sure to go at your own pace and don’t overexert yourself.

Swimming and water aerobics are some of the best exercises for women with arthritis because water helps you move without resistance. Plus, being in a warm pool can be soothing for your joints.

Strength training builds muscle and bone and you don’t need to lift weights. Exercises with a set of resistance bands can get similar results, or you can use your body weight alone with exercises like squats, planks, push-ups and crunches.

You may already have a hobby or chores that can help ease the pain of arthritis.  Gardening and housework count as exercise and anything that keeps you moving briskly is good for you.

Remember to consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program and take a break if you feel severe pain. It’s also important to eat healthy and drink plenty of water. This is the fuel and lubrication your muscles and joints need to help you move freely to fight the effects of arthritis.
