What to Expect in the Second Trimester of PregnancyPregnancy is divided into three-month periods called trimesters. In the first, your body goes through a lot adjusting to the new person growing inside of you. In the last trimester, you’re in the home stretch when the effects of pregnancy reach their peak and your body is quickly preparing for delivery.

Compared to those times, the second trimester can seem like a breeze. Your body has adapted to carrying a child and it’s likely that morning sickness is gone.  You may even be sleeping better. Your child’s birth is still months away, but prenatal care is important throughout your pregnancy and there are things to discuss with your doctor when you hit the mid-way point.

Ask about common symptoms you may be experiencing, like fatigue, heartburn or varicose veins, and talk to your doctor about back pain or other aches and pains that can result from weight gain during pregnancy.

You may begin to feel cramps in your lower abdomen during your second trimester as your uterus expands and puts pressure on nearby muscles, ligaments, and tendons. This is also when hormone changes can cause swollen, tender gums that may bleed easily. Keep brushing and flossing because pregnant women suffering from gum disease are more likely to deliver a pre-term baby at a lower birth weight.

The second trimester is also when your doctor may offer genetic testing for conditions such as spina bifida or Down syndrome, and blood testing to screen for low iron levels and Rh-negative blood. A baby ultrasound later in the second trimester can help evaluate fetal anatomy and might give you an opportunity to find out the baby’s sex.

At every prenatal visit it’s important to tell your doctor what’s on your mind, even if it seems silly. Nothing is too trivial when it comes to your health and the health of your baby.
